The procedure can be carried out under either general or local anaesthetic.

Patients who have only had one toe treated by arthrodesis with an internal implant such as SMART TOE^®, may be able to leave the hospital immediately wearing their usual footwear, subject to the surgeon’s post-op assessment. However, if the arthrodesis has been carried out using a pin, which protrudes from the toe, patients may be required to remain in hospital for a longer period, and will be required to wear specially adapted footwear.

With an internal implant such as the SMART TOE^®, you will be able to shower the next day because the small scar will be watertight. However, with a pin, a shower is not advisable for about three weeks afterwards.
